Background & context

The 8th Army was a formation of many nations: British, Australians, New Zealanders, Indians and South Africans fought under the same command from Cyrenaica through El Alamein to Tunis and later Italy. Their equipment was often older than the war itself. The water-cooled Vickers came from the trenches of 1916 and still laid down barrage fire for hours on end, while the 3-inch mortar gave the platoons high-angle fire for which the divisional artillery would otherwise have had to be called up. Together with an officer, that was the backbone of a company.

On the tabletop

This metal group brings leadership, sustained fire and indirect fire to an 8th Army force in North Africa. The officer gives your squads their orders. The water-cooled .303 Vickers dates from the First World War and lays down continuous fire across open ground at long range. The 3-inch mortar with its three crew fires in an arc over cover and reached up to 3,000 yards depending on the round. It was often carried in a Universal Carrier.
