Background & context

The Wehrmacht bicycle was not a makeshift but part of the planning. Bicycle squadrons already belonged to the reconnaissance of the infantry divisions in 1939, because a squad on bicycles got considerably further in a day than on foot and used not a drop of fuel in doing so. The Model 42 was the wartime simplified version of the older M40: sturdy frame, hardly any chrome, mounts for carbine and kit. From 1944 the Volkssturm and improvised units fell back on it because there was simply nothing else available.

On the tabletop

Two army bicycles with riders show German infantry on wheels, as reconnaissance units used them from the start of the war. On the table you field them as dispatch riders carrying orders between units, or as the head of a bicycle squad that reaches a flank faster than troops on foot. From 1944 they also suit the Volkssturm and improvised units. Leaned against a house wall, they add detail to terrain and dioramas.
