    Product details

    Background & context

The 25-pounder was the backbone of the British field artillery, a gun-howitzer that could lay barrages and, in an emergency, fire directly at tanks. In North Africa that was no longer enough against German armour, so in early 1943 the barrel of the new 17-pounder anti-tank gun was fitted to the existing carriage. This stopgap was officially called the 17/25 Pdr and known to the troops as the Pheasant. It was already in position before the proper 17-pounder carriage was available.

    On the tabletop

As a 25-pounder the gun is the field artillery of British and Commonwealth forces: it lays down barrages at long range and can fire directly at tanks when needed. As a 17/25-pounder with the barrel of the 17-pounder anti-tank gun it becomes heavy anti-tank defence, which faced the Tiger in North Africa from 1943. For the 25-pounder you choose between the Mk I and Mk II barrel, and the limber can be built with its door open or closed. Five gunners in North Africa uniform are included.
