    Background & context

    When demand for light vehicles exploded in 1939, the British reached for the obvious solution: production cars were given a load bed with a canvas tilt at the back and were from then on called Car, Light Utility 4 x 2. Austin, Morris, Hillman and Standard built them, and the nickname Tilly stuck to all of them. They carried dispatches, officers, wounded and spare parts at company and battalion level. Austin alone delivered around 29,000 by the end of the war.

    On the tabletop

    The Austin Tilly is a light British utility vehicle built on a car chassis, for Second World War games in 28 mm. At company and battalion level it handles dispatch runs, carries officers and brings back wounded, so it belongs behind the front rather than in the firefight. A driver and a passenger in British uniform are included. During assembly you pick one of three radiator grilles and show the tarpaulin, rear cover and tailgate open or closed.
