    Background & context

    Vickers put the Valentine forward in 1938 at its own expense, without an order from the War Office: small, thick-skinned and put together from proven components. It was exactly this modesty that made it the most-produced British tank design of the war. The Marks II to V differ mainly in their powerplant and in details of the turret, and they served from the 8th Army in the desert to New Zealand units in the Pacific. More than 2,500 went to the Red Army under Lend-Lease, where crews valued the low silhouette.

    On the tabletop

    Small and thickly armoured, the Valentine accompanies the foot soldiers as a British infantry tank and can take a lot of fire. You build it as a Mk II, III, IIIcs, IV or V and choose headlights, mudguards and a Bren gun. With the Commonwealth crew it joins the Eighth Army in the desert or New Zealand units in the Pacific, and with the Soviet crew the Red Army, which received many Valentines through Lend-Lease.
