This Rubicon 1:56 scale plastic kit builds either an M4A4 Sherman (Sherman V) or a Sherman Firefly VC. The kit contains 105 parts across 4 sprues, options for open or closed hatches and tank crew figures.

Historically, the set represents British and Commonwealth Shermans as well as the Firefly conversion with a 17-pounder anti-tank gun.

Background & context

The M4A4 was the odd one out: a lengthened welded hull housing the Chrysler A57 Multibank, made up of five car engines coupled together. The US Army kept it for training at home, while most of the 7,499 vehicles built between July 1942 and November 1943 went to the British, who designated it the Sherman V. From early 1944 around 2,000 were converted to the Firefly VC and armed with the 17-pounder, which penetrated the armour of the Panther and Tiger at combat ranges. German crews therefore fired at the long barrel first.

On the tabletop

In British, Canadian and Polish tank troops the M4A4 is a common sight as the Sherman V, and as the Firefly VC with the 17-pounder it is the tank that penetrates Panthers and Tigers at combat range. You decide its role during assembly. Because German crews aimed at the Firefly first, you keep it covered among the standard Shermans. Commander and crew hatches can be opened, and figures are included.
