    In the 1930s the Soviets simply put a tank turret with a 45 mm gun on a lorry chassis. The kit gives you the choice between BA-3 and BA-6, plus turret hatches that open and auxiliary tracks for the rear axles.

    Background & context

    In 1933 the Red Army took the BA-3 into service, and around 180 were built by 1935; from 1936 to 1938 there followed 386 of the revised BA-6. The difference shows at the rear: the BA-3 had a door there, the BA-6 lacks it but was given sponge-filled tyres instead. Both carried the turret of contemporary tanks complete with 45 mm gun, which gave them unusually sharp teeth for armoured cars. They were used in Spain, at Khalkhin Gol and in the Winter War; captured vehicles later carried on under Finnish and German flags.

    On the tabletop

    With a tank turret and 45 mm gun, the BA-3 or BA-6 is an armoured car that can also take on vehicles and tanks. Its thin armour, however, offers little protection against heavy machine guns and small cannon, so you look for the flank rather than a frontal exchange. It suits games in the Spanish Civil War, at Khalkhin Gol, in the Winter War and in the first months on the Eastern Front. During assembly you choose BA-3 or BA-6 and can fit the auxiliary tracks.
