    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The VW Beetle (officially Volkswagen Type 1) is a two-door, rear-engine compact car for up to five people. In 1934, Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned to develop an affordable "people's car", later officially known as the KdF-Wagen. The first pre-production vehicles for exhibitions were built in late 1938, but due to World War II, civilian series production did not begin until the late 1940s. With over 21.5 million units produced, the Beetle is the most manufactured vehicle on a single platform of all time.
