The VW Schwimmwagen Type 166 was the most produced amphibious all-wheel drive vehicle in history - over 15,000 units were built between 1941 and 1944. Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS used it on almost all theatres of war, from the swamps of the Eastern Front to North Africa. This detailed plastic model kit recreates it with a foldable windshield, positionable rear propeller, and optional MG 34 or MG 42.

Hintergrund & Einordnung

The VW Schwimmwagen Type 166 was one of the most mass-produced amphibious four-wheel-drive vehicles in history. Between 1941 and 1944, over 15,000 units rolled off the production line. It was based on VW technology with an air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine and a four-speed manual transmission, with the four-wheel drive engageable in first gear and reverse. The Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS used it in almost all theaters of war - from the swamps of the Pripet Marshes on the Eastern Front across North Africa and Tunisia to Sicily and Western Europe. Soldiers also called it 'Frog' due to its amphibious capabilities.

The Schwimmwagen Type 166 is a light amphibious all-terrain vehicle for communications and reconnaissance. In the game, it can reach scenario objectives, represent light squads, or serve as a characterful HQ vehicle. Its optional MG armament makes it more useful, but it does not replace an armored combat vehicle.
