    Background & context

The 88 was intended as an anti-aircraft gun and became famous as a tank killer. The Sonderanhänger axles allowed limited fire while still on its wheels; for a fixed position the bogies were removed and the side outriggers folded down, a good two and a half minutes of work. A central predictor fed its data to all four guns of a battery, and the crew only had to follow the pointers and load. Over 20,000 came off the line, mostly towed by the SdKfz 7 half-track tractor.

    On the tabletop

In Second World War games the eighty-eight is both a heavy anti-aircraft gun and a feared long-range anti-tank gun. On the SdAh 202 carriage it stays mobile and can already fire at tanks in a limited way while on its wheels, and once emplaced with the outriggers lowered it is fully ready for action. You build it as a FlaK 36 or FlaK 37, and eight crew in early Heer uniform turn it into a complete gun position. It was usually towed by the Sd.Kfz. 7.
