    Product details

    Background & context

In 1942 the Red Army needed an assault gun that could keep up with the tank arm. The U-35 prototype became the SU-122: T-34 chassis, casemate superstructure, 122 mm M-30S howitzer. Production ran from December 1942 into the summer of 1944. Because the howitzer achieved little against armour, the SU-85 followed in 1943 on the same hull, this time with the 85 mm D-5S gun as a pure tank destroyer.

    On the tabletop

On the T-34 chassis you build one of two Soviet self-propelled guns. From late 1942 the SU-122 with its 122 mm howitzer blasts buildings, trenches and positions for the advancing infantry. The SU-85 of 1943 is a pure tank destroyer that engages enemy tanks at range with its 85 mm gun. Since neither has a rotating turret, you turn the whole vehicle towards the target. Fuel cans and open hatches are optional.
