Hintergrund & Einordnung

The Yakovlev Yak-1 was one of the first modern Soviet fighter aircraft to be deployed in large numbers on the Eastern Front after the German attack on the Soviet Union. The improved Yak-1b variant was developed as a direct response to experiences from early aerial combat and offered pilots significantly improved all-round visibility as well as revised armament. Despite its modest armament, the type's high maneuverability made it a formidable opponent in turning dogfights. The Yak series formed the backbone of Soviet fighter aviation and played a major role in gradually regaining air superiority on the Eastern Front.
