    Background & context

    The Yak-1 was one of the first Soviet fighters able to take on German equipment and went to the front in large numbers from 1941. The 1b variant came straight out of the experience of the first months of the war: a cut-down rear fuselage for a clear view to the rear and revised armament of one 20 mm ShVAK cannon and one 12.7 mm Berezin MG. That was not much firepower, but the aircraft turned tighter than almost anything it faced. The Yak series thus became the backbone of the Soviet fighter arm.

    On the tabletop

    In Blood Red Skies a squadron of Yak-1bs can hold its own against any comparable German fighter squadron. As is typical of Soviet aircraft it is very agile but lightly armed, with one 20 mm cannon and one heavy machine gun. You will do well against early Bf 109s, but late-war Fw 190s are a harder fight. The 1b version with its cut-down rear fuselage grew out of the experience of the first months of war on the Eastern Front. Pilot discs, cards and decals are included.
