Product details

Background & context

Carthaginian armies stood in the context of ancient warfare in North Africa and the Western Mediterranean. Carthage fielded mixed armies with African, Iberian, Gallic, and other contingents, especially in the Punic Wars against Rome. Such troops were used in armies characterized by different weapons, levels of protection, and tactical roles. For tabletop armies, the set forms a clear historical building block for Carthaginian armies of the Punic Wars. The classification is based on the depicted troop type and the historical framework described by the manufacturer.

On the tabletop

With three troop types in one box you build the African infantry core of a Carthaginian army. The 24 Liby-Phoenicians fight like Greek hoplites in a tight phalanx and hold the centre. Hannibal's 24 veterans wear partly captured Roman armour, and you commit them where the fighting is hardest. The 14 Libyan javelinmen skirmish ahead of the line. The army suits all three Punic Wars, and also fights Iberians, Gauls, Greeks and Numidians.
