Background & context

Die großen Klöster Japans hielten sich eigene Heere. Mönche von Enryaku-ji auf dem Hiei-Berg oder von Kōfuku-ji in Nara zogen mit der Naginata in die Hauptstadt, um Forderungen durchzusetzen, und mischten sich in Erbfolgestreite ein. Ihre Macht endete abrupt: 1571 ließ Oda Nobunaga den Klosterberg niederbrennen und beseitigte damit einen Machtfaktor, der Jahrhunderte überdauert hatte.

On the tabletop

These 24 sōhei are warrior monks of the great Japanese monasteries such as Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei. With the naginata you build them for close combat, with the yumi bow or the teppo musket as missile troops. They fight as an independent monastery army or reinforce the army of a daimyō as allies. Until Oda Nobunaga had the monastery mountain burned in 1571, the monks also intervened in disputes over succession. The scale is 28 mm.
