Background & context

Ugarit and the Syro-Canaanite city-states are set in the context of ancient warfare in the Levant. In the Late Bronze Age, these cities were caught between great powers such as Egypt, Hatti, Mitanni, and Assyria. Such troops were used in armies characterized by different weapons, levels of protection, and tactical roles. For tabletop armies, the set forms a clear historical building block for Late Bronze Age Hail Caesar armies. The classification is based on the depicted troop type and the historical framework described by the manufacturer.

On the tabletop

A driver, an armoured archer and an armoured javelin thrower on a chariot drawn by two armoured horses: this is how the Maryannu warrior elite of the Syrian city states fought. In Hail Caesar or Clash of Spears you use the chariot as a mobile platform for arrows and javelins, with infantry following in support. Ugarit, Kadesh and Megiddo were vassals or allies of the great powers, so the chariot fits alongside Egyptian, Hittite or Mitannian troops.
