Background & context

Der ovale Thureos kam über die keltischen Einfälle nach Griechenland, die 279 v. Chr. bis nach Delphi vorstießen. Die hellenistischen Heere übernahmen den Schild und formten daraus einen Truppentyp, der weder reiner Plänkler noch Phalangit war. Thureophoroi warfen Speere, konnten aber auch in der Linie stehen, und tauchten von Achaia über die Seleukiden bis zu den Ptolemäern auf. In Armeelisten sind sie die Truppe, die Löcher stopft.

On the tabletop

In Hellenistic armies, thureophoroi fill the gap between the phalanx and the cavalry wings. With javelins they skirmish at range, and with the long thrusting spear held in the shield hand they stand in a shield wall and can stop cavalry as well. In rough terrain where pikemen cannot advance, you use them to seize hills and settlements. The 36 oval shields come in three shapes, plus 84 heads and arms for trumpeters and standard bearers.
