Background & context

Thorakitai heißt so viel wie Panzerträger. Polybios nennt sie um die Mitte des 2. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. bei Achaiern und Seleukiden: Mittelinfanterie mit Brustpanzer und dem ovalen Thureos, beweglicher als die Sarissenphalanx und billiger im Unterhalt. Genau solche Truppen übernahmen nach und nach die Rolle der Pikeniere, teils sogar nach römischem Vorbild ausgerüstet, und dienten als Söldner oder Reguläre in achaiischen, seleukidischen und ptolemäischen Heeren. Der Grabstein des Salmas aus Sidon zeigt einen dieser Männer.

On the tabletop

Four metal figures give your Thorakitai unit a command base in Hail Caesar. As armoured medium infantry with the oval thureos shield they are more mobile than the sarissa phalanx and gradually took over its role in later Hellenistic armies. Polybius mentions them among the Achaeans and Seleucids around the middle of the 2nd century BC, and the Ptolemies used such troops as well. On the table you place them between your phalanx and your light troops.
