Product details

Background & context

Thorakitai stand in the context of ancient warfare in the Hellenistic world. They are associated with more heavily armed infantrymen of the successor kingdoms and Greek states, who acted more flexibly than classical phalanx troops. Such troops were used in armies characterized by different weapons, levels of protection, and tactical roles. For tabletop armies, the set forms a clear historical building block for Hellenistic armies and successor kingdoms. The classification is based on the troop type depicted and the historical framework described by the manufacturer.

On the tabletop

Thorakitai means the armoured ones, and these eight figures with armour and long shields take the field in Hellenistic armies for Hail Caesar or Clash of Spears. Polybius describes them supporting lighter troops, so you place them beside peltasts and thureophoroi. On broken ground where the sarissa phalanx struggles, they hold the line. They suit Achaean, Seleucid and Ptolemaic armies of the 2nd century BC.
