Background & context

Die Heilige Schar bestand aus 150 Paaren, die Theben aus Staatsmitteln unterhielt und dauerhaft unter Waffen hielt, im Griechenland der Bürgermilizen eine Ausnahme. 371 v. Chr. brach sie bei Leuktra den spartanischen Flügel und beendete eine Vormacht, die Jahrhunderte gehalten hatte. Die thebanische Hegemonie überlebte trotzdem nur eine Generation. Bei Chaironeia 338 v. Chr. floh der Rest des Heeres vor Philipp II., die Schar blieb stehen und wurde ausgelöscht.

On the tabletop

Four metal figures form the command base of the Sacred Band in Hail Caesar, the 300 elite hoplites of your Theban army. Thebes kept these 150 pairs under arms permanently at public expense, an exception in a Greece of citizen militias. On the table you can refight Leuctra in 371 BC, where under Pelopidas they broke the Spartan wing, or Chaeronea in 338 BC, where they held firm against Philip II while the rest of the army fled, and fell with Theagenes.
