Background & context

Nach Alexanders Tod zerfiel sein Reich, seine Taktik blieb. Seleukiden, Ptolemäer und Antigoniden stellten weiter Blöcke aus Männern mit der überlangen Sarissa auf, deren Spitzen mehrere Reihen tief aus der Front ragten. Bei Raphia 217 v. Chr. schoben sich zwei solche Phalangen frontal ineinander. Erst die römischen Manipel zeigten, wie wenig der Block wert war, sobald zerrissenes Gelände seine Ordnung auflöste.

On the tabletop

The long sarissas of these 24 pikemen project beyond the front from several ranks at once, so you place them as a closed block in the centre. Three command figures with trumpet and standard lead the block. Your army thus belongs to the Seleucids, Ptolemies or Antigonids who fought over Alexander's empire after his death. In broken ground the phalanx loses its order, so lighter troops protect its flanks.
