Background & context

Sparta stellte seine Bürger von Kindesbeinen an auf den Krieg ein, während Heloten die Felder bestellten. Die Phalanx aus Spartiaten galt als unschlagbar, doch die Zahl der Vollbürger schrumpfte über die Jahrzehnte immer weiter. Wer sich die Hoplitenrüstung nicht leisten konnte, zog mit Schleuder, Wurfspeer oder Steinen ins Feld. Bleigeschosse trugen dabei mitunter Sprüche für den Empfänger. Nach Leuktra 371 v. Chr. war die Vormacht dahin.

On the tabletop

Aufgestellt wird von der Mitte aus: 160 Hopliten reichen für mehrere volle Blöcke, die nebeneinander eine geschlossene Phalanx bilden und den Gegner frontal binden. Das Kommando aus Metall führt die Armee und steht dort, wo die Entscheidung fallen soll. Als leichte Truppe gibt es nur die 8 Schleuderer, die vor der Linie oder an einem Flügel plänkeln und den Gegner beschießen, bevor die Speere ankommen. Reiter liegen nicht bei, die Flanken sicherst du also mit Gelände oder einem zusätzlichen Hoplitenblock. Die 4 Decalbögen geben den Schilden ihr spartanisches Muster.
