Background & context

Sparta zog seine Bürgerkrieger aus einer Gesellschaft, die den Drill zum Lebensinhalt gemacht hatte. Im Peloponnesischen Krieg galt die lakedämonische Phalanx als kaum zu brechen, bis Epameinondas 371 v. Chr. bei Leuktra den Gegenbeweis lieferte. Das rote Gewand und das Lambda auf dem Schild machten die Spartiaten schon von weitem kenntlich. Die Box deckt die Spanne vom Ende der Perserkriege bis in die hellenistische Zeit ab.

On the tabletop

The 48 armoured hoplites from Sparta and Laconia form the phalanx you place in the centre of your battle line. Shield to shield it pushes against the enemy front while keeping its order. Their period runs from the end of the Persian Wars through the Peloponnesian War against Athens to the struggles with Thebes. The long hair of the Spartiates plugs separately into the back of the head, and you paint the lambda on the shields.
