Product details

Background & context

Wherever artillery and bombers had been at work, they left a field full of holes, and that often helped the defender more than the attacker. After the heavy air raids on Caen in July 1944, British tanks could barely move between the craters and the rubble. At Monte Cassino German paratroopers dug in among the ruins and craters left by the bombing. For infantry a fresh crater was often the only cover for miles around.

On the tabletop

In Bolt Action, scatter the five craters across ground that would otherwise be open and offer no cover at all. A unit lying in a crater is far better protected from direct fire than one standing in the open. Agree before the game whether the craters count as rough ground for vehicles. After a preparatory bombardment they also show exactly where the shells came down.
