Background & context

Nach dem Abzug der Legionen um 410 setzten Angeln, Sachsen und Jüten über die Nordsee, zuerst als angeworbene Söldner, dann als Landnehmer. Wer eine Gefolgschaft durchfüttern konnte, wurde Warlord; wer Beute und Land verteilte, blieb es. Aus diesem Wettbewerb kleiner Herrschaften wuchsen über zwei Jahrhunderte die Königreiche Wessex, Mercia und Northumbria. Der Kriegsherr an der Spitze seines Haushalts war die einzige Ordnung, die damals verlässlich funktionierte.

On the tabletop

Each of these three Saxon warlords leads a retinue of your early Anglo-Saxons in Hail Caesar. Use them as commanders of small divisions that together make up your army, just like the competing lordships after the legions left around 410. Whoever could hand out plunder and land stayed a warlord, and from this rivalry Wessex, Mercia and Northumbria later grew. On the table they suit fights against rivals and former employers.
