Background & context

Huscarls waren keine Bauernaufgebote, sondern bezahlte Berufskrieger im Haushalt eines Königs oder Earls. Knut der Große brachte die Einrichtung im frühen 11. Jahrhundert aus Dänemark nach England; bezahlt wurde aus dem Heregeld, ausgerüstet mit Kettenhemd, Helm und der langen Axt. Bei Hastings 1066 hielten sie den Kern von Harolds Linie auf dem Kamm und fielen dort fast vollständig - mit ihnen verschwand diese Truppengattung aus England.

On the tabletop

Eight huscarls with the two-handed Dane axe form the elite for the centre of your Anglo-Saxon shield wall in Hail Caesar. With the axe in both hands there was no arm free for a shield, so these warriors relied on their neighbours for protection, and you place the unit between shield-bearing troops. Cnut the Great brought these paid professional warriors to England in the early 11th century. At Hastings in 1066 huscarls held the core of Harold's line on the ridge.
