Background & context

Die Fyrd war das Aufgebot der freien Männer eines Shires: gestellt nach Hufen Land, einberufen auf Befehl des Königs und nach begrenzter Frist wieder nach Hause geschickt. Bewaffnet waren die Männer meist mit Speer und Schild, seltener mit Kettenhemd. Genau diese Frist wurde 1066 zum Problem - Harold Godwinson musste seine Fyrd im Spätsommer entlassen, kurz bevor die normannische Flotte landete.

On the tabletop

One frame of heads and weapons and two frames of bodies make eight warriors of the Saxon fyrd for your Hail Caesar army. The remaining heads and weapons stay as spares, so you can equip your warriors as you wish. The fyrd was the levy of a shire's free men, mostly armed with spear and shield, and formed the mass behind the armoured warriors in the shield wall. Several packs build a larger unit.
