Background & context

Im 11. Jahrhundert war England ein Flickwerk aus Earldoms, deren Herren Steuern eintrieben, Gerichte hielten und eigene Gefolgschaften unterhielten. Godwine und seine Söhne wurden so mächtig, dass die Krone ohne sie nicht mehr regieren konnte. 1066 entschied sich dieses Gefüge innerhalb von drei Wochen: Stamford Bridge, dann Hastings - und die Earls waren Geschichte.

On the tabletop

With three kings and earls on foot you lead your 11th-century Anglo-Saxon army in Hail Caesar, the king as commander-in-chief and the earls as commanders of your divisions. The earls kept their own retinues, which you can field as separate divisions on the table. Godwine and his sons grew so powerful that the crown could hardly rule without them. Fitting battles are Stamford Bridge and Hastings in 1066. The figures are metal.
