    Background & context

    Die Sarmaten gehörten zu den iranischsprachigen Reitervölkern zwischen Donau und Wolga, die ab dem 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. die Skythen verdrängten. Rom lernte sie an der mittleren Donau kennen, meist als Bundesgenossen der Daker in den Kriegen Domitians und Trajans. Nach dem Frieden von 175 n. Chr. nahm Marcus Aurelius sarmatische Reiter als Hilfstruppen in Dienst, ein Teil davon ging nach Britannien. Grabfunde zeigen Bogen, Wurfspeere und lange Stoßlanzen dicht beieinander.

    On the tabletop

    Whether in a Dacian army, as a Sarmatian force of their own or later as Roman auxiliaries, these three riders can serve in several armies. In Hail Caesar they are light cavalry that operate on the flanks and pursue fleeing enemies. After the peace of 175 AD Marcus Aurelius took Sarmatian horsemen into Roman service. Suitable opponents are the legions of Domitian's and Trajan's wars.
