Product details

Background & context

The early Roman legions are in the context of ancient warfare in Italy and the Mediterranean. The depicted troops belong to the period of the wars against Pyrrhus, Carthage, and Macedonian opponents. Such troops were employed in armies characterized by different weapons, levels of protection, and tactical roles. For tabletop armies, the set forms a clear historical building block for Republican legions and Velites. The classification is based on the depicted troop type and the historical framework described by the manufacturer.

On the tabletop

The pectoral plate was worn by legionaries who could not afford mail, and those are the men this second Republican legion box depicts. The 36 legionaries form the heavy line as hastati and principes, while the 18 velites open the fight in front as skirmishers. Combined with the mail-armoured box, your legion gets men with equipment of differing cost. Opponents include Gauls, Iberians, Numidians, Seleucids, Pyrrhus or Hannibal's Carthaginians.
