Product details

Background & context

The legions of the Roman Republic are set in the context of ancient warfare in Italy and the Mediterranean. In the early and middle republican context, manipular-organized legions with heavy infantry and light Velites developed. Such troops were used in armies characterized by different weapons, degrees of protection, and tactical roles. For tabletop armies, the set forms a clear historical building block for Republican Roman armies. The classification is based on the depicted troop type and the historical framework described by the manufacturer.

On the tabletop

These 60 Romans in mail make up the three lines of a manipular legion. With the pilum you build hastati for the front line and principes for the second, with the long spear the triarii who stay at the back as the last reserve. The 18 light infantrymen become either velites with shields or the earlier leves, who carry only javelins. Centurions, standard bearers and musicians lead the legion against Pyrrhus, against Carthage or into the Macedonian Wars.
