    Product details

    Background & context

The Polikarpov I-16 was one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world in the 1930s and is considered one of the first monoplane fighters with retractable landing gear. The Soviet Air Force deployed this type in large numbers, and it proved its worth in various conflicts of that era. Despite its relatively small size, the I-16 had formidable armament and was known for its exceptional maneuverability. Later in World War II, it was outclassed by more modern designs but remained a characteristic symbol of early Soviet airpower.

    On the tabletop

By 1941 the Polikarpov I-16 was technically outdated, but it stood in large numbers on the western border and carried much of the first defensive fighting. In Blood Red Skies the squadron of six forms a swarm of agile fighters with a low minimum move, letting you out-turn faster opponents. As a second wave behind Yak-1s or MiG-3s, you pounce on whatever gets through after the first clash. Before that it had already fought over Spain, China and Mongolia.
