Background & context

Church tower and mill were the only tall buildings in a rural parish and so of military interest. From the top of the tower a commander could survey the ground, so it was occupied, fired on and occupied again; the bells also called in the surrounding country. Mills ground the bread of whole parishes, which is why troops secured them or put them out of action as soon as the enemy depended on them.

On the tabletop

A church, a watermill and a windmill give a village on your Epic Battles table a skyline you can recognise from across the table. As the only tall buildings in a rural parish they offered a view and were therefore occupied and fired upon. In Pike & Shotte Epic Battles you use them as objectives and sight blockers both sides advance towards. The three laser-cut MDF buildings suit the Thirty Years' War and the English Civil Wars.
