Background & context

The Thirty Years' War transformed large parts of Central Europe into a battlefield of confessional and power-political disputes. The Habsburg-Catholic forces were opposed by a shifting alliance of Protestant powers, which included Sweden, Denmark, and various German princes. Outstanding military commanders shaped the warfare of this era: Gustav II Adolf of Sweden is still considered one of the most influential military reformers of his time, whose tactical innovations profoundly changed European warfare. Rulers such as the Danish King Christian IV and nobles like Louis de Bourbon also played significant roles in the complex alliance politics of the conflict.

On the tabletop

This set provides five mounted commanders for the opponents of the Habsburgs in the Thirty Years War in Epic Battles and Pike & Shotte. Gustavus Adolphus stands for the Swedish army with its shallow formations, volley fire and light regimental guns, Åke Tott for its cavalry, John George I for the Saxon troops, Christian IV for the Danish phase from 1625 and Louis de Bourbon for the French side. That gives every brigade in your army its own commander. The figures are cast in Warlord Resin.
