Background & context

The Thirty Years' War, which transformed large parts of Central Europe into a battlefield between 1618 and 1648, is considered one of the most momentous conflicts in European history. On the Imperial side were the Habsburg forces, whose fate was significantly shaped by a handful of extraordinary military leaders. Commanders like Wallenstein and Tilly defined the warfare of their era through their strategic individuality, brutality, and ability to hold together heterogeneous mercenary armies. The fight for Emperor and Church combined religious conviction with dynastic power claims and created a leadership corps unparalleled in 17th-century military history.

On the tabletop

These five mounted commanders lead the Imperial side of the Thirty Years War in Epic Battles and Pike & Shotte. With Wallenstein, Tilly, Pappenheim, Piccolomini and the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand, every brigade of your army gets a named commander to give it orders. Tilly suits the heavy tercio blocks of the Catholic League at Breitenfeld, Pappenheim the cavalry charges up to Lützen, and the Cardinal-Infante the Spanish victory at Nördlingen in 1634. The figures are cast in Warlord Resin.
