    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The Covenanters emerged as a political-religious movement in 17th-century Scotland, opposing the English Crown's interference in the Presbyterian church order. Their forces were considered unusually professional for a civil war contingent, as many of their officers brought experience from the battlefields of continental Europe. The characteristic grey of their uniforms gave the army a unified appearance that distinguished them from other contemporary units. As allies, the Covenanters switched sides multiple times during the British Civil Wars, always guided by both religious and power-political interests.
