Product details

Background & context

The Covenanters emerged as a political-religious movement in 17th-century Scotland, opposing the English Crown's interference in the Presbyterian church order. Their forces were considered unusually professional for a civil war contingent, as many of their officers brought experience from the battlefields of continental Europe. The characteristic grey of their uniforms gave the army a unified appearance that distinguished them from other contemporary units. As allies, the Covenanters switched sides multiple times during the British Civil Wars, always guided by both religious and power-political interests.

On the tabletop

Twelve foot regiments of pike and musket make up the bulk, and each of them can take one of the 12 frame guns as light regimental artillery. Spread across several battalias, each under a mounted commander, this gives a long, even infantry line for the centre. The 24 Scots Lancers and the 30 harquebusiers go on the wings, with the cuirassiers held back as a heavy reserve. The dragoons ride forward and dismount to occupy hedges and farmsteads. Group the sakers and falconets into one battery, Lord Leven leads the army, and Argyll and the minister stay at headquarters.
