    Background & context

    In the 17th century, the mortar was one of the most feared weapons of siege warfare. Unlike field artillery, it specialized in subduing fortified positions: its steeply rising projectiles flew over battlements and watchtowers, only to detonate in streets and buildings. The psychological impact on garrisons and civilians was enormous - the sustained shelling often drove city dwellers to urge their authorities to surrender. Its use required experienced cannoneers, as precisely setting the fuse was as dangerous as the firing itself.

    On the tabletop

    A mortar with three crew brings high-angle fire to your siege scenarios in 13.5 mm Pike & Shotte games. The bomb flies high over walls and towers and lands in the streets and houses beyond. Mortars were rarely used in open battle, but in front of a town or a fortified manor house you set this one up behind your line. Sieges of the English Civil War such as Basing House or Colchester provide the setting.
