    Background & context

In the 17th-century English Civil War, a Scottish Royalist army under the Marquis of Montrose fought against the forces of the Covenanter Parliament - numerically inferior, yet remarkably effective tactically. This force united Highland Scottish warriors with Irish detachments of the Irish Brigade and a small but determined cavalry troop. The Highland clans brought an archaic, impetuous fighting style that was almost unparalleled on the battlefields of that era. The lack of heavy artillery and regular cavalry forced the army into daring improvisation, giving it a character that clearly distinguished it from the line armies on both sides.

    On the tabletop

The attack is carried by the four regiments of Highland Clansmen, 40 figures each, who stand in the front rank and want to get into melee as fast as possible. Alisdair Mac Colla with his 2 bodyguards belongs right among them. Behind them, three regiments of pike and musket and a fourth from the Covenanter sprue with its frame gun hold the line, each with 80 figures. The cavalry stays thin: 20 harquebusiers, 4 cuirassiers and the dragoons, who dismount to secure a flank. Two sakers and two falconets give covering fire, and Montrose himself stands at headquarters with the mounted herald.
