    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    In the 17th-century English Civil War, a Scottish Royalist army under the Marquis of Montrose fought against the forces of the Covenanter Parliament - numerically inferior, yet remarkably effective tactically. This force united Highland Scottish warriors with Irish detachments of the Irish Brigade and a small but determined cavalry troop. The Highland clans brought an archaic, impetuous fighting style that was almost unparalleled on the battlefields of that era. The lack of heavy artillery and regular cavalry forced the army into daring improvisation, giving it a character that clearly distinguished it from the line armies on both sides.
