    Background & context

    The English Civil War of the 17th century divided the British Isles into Royalists and Parliamentarians and profoundly shaped the development of early modern warfare. The cavalry of both sides initially differed significantly: Royalist horsemen relied on daring shock charges with cold steel, while Parliamentarian units initially focused on controlled skirmishing with firearms - a distinction that largely faded by the end of the war. Dragoons were considered versatile combat troops, capable of fighting mounted or dismounted, and were indispensable for securing key positions like bridges. Cuirassiers in heavy plate armor were a rare exception and were almost exclusively found as bodyguards or elite units.

    On the tabletop

    This box covers the mounted arm of an English Civil War army in 13.5 mm Pike & Shotte games. The 30 harquebusiers with carbines make up your horse regiments, while you use the six cuirassiers as a lifeguard troop or mix them in among the harquebusiers. Nine mounted and 15 dismounted dragoons hold bridges and defiles, and 18 commanded shot support your horse with musket fire. Three each of sakers and falconets, three mounted commanders, three cornets and three ensigns complete the set.
