Product details

Background & context

In the summer of 1940 Britain feared that German gliders and transport aircraft might land on its own airfields, as had just happened in the Netherlands. One answer was a concrete cylinder set level with the airfield surface so that aircraft could taxi straight over it. On alarm the crew raised it about 75 centimetres with compressed air and fired a Bren gun through three loopholes in any direction. It was never tested in a real attack.

On the tabletop

Place the pillbox at the edge of a runway or in the middle of an airfield. It fits scenarios in which German paratroopers or glider troops try to seize a British airfield and a small Bren gun crew greets them from below ground. Since the loopholes face every direction, it cannot simply be bypassed. As a house rule the defender might only deploy it once the first enemy units have landed.
