Background & context

Unprotected Persian spearmen are situated in the context of ancient warfare in the Achaemenid Persian Empire. They represent a flexible infantry option, capable of intercepting enemy attacks with spear and spara. Such troops were employed in armies characterized by diverse weaponry, levels of protection, and tactical roles. For tabletop armies, the set forms a clear historical building block for Persian line infantry. The classification is based on the depicted troop type and the historical framework described by the manufacturer.

On the tabletop

Lightly equipped spearmen made up the bulk of the levies in Xerxes' campaign against Greece in 480 BC. In your army the 24 men fill out the width of the battle line and hold flanks and pieces of terrain. The included sparas go in the front rank so that the unit can fend off charging cavalry. In open ground against hoplites they stand little chance, so keep them in formation. Six command figures lead the unit.
