Das Achämenidenreich stützte seine Feldzüge auf Reiterei aus den Satrapien - medische, baktrische und sakische Kontingente stellten Tausende Pferde. Gezüchtet wurde auf den Weiden Mediens, berühmt waren die nisäischen Pferde. Leichte Speerreiter ritten ohne Panzerung, weil Ausdauer über Wochen im Marsch mehr wog als Schutz im einzelnen Zusammenstoß. Bei Plataiai 479 v. Chr. zeigte diese Reiterei, wie hart sie eine griechische Phalanx im offenen Gelände bedrängen konnte.

On the tabletop

Early Achaemenid armies fielded cavalry in large numbers, and light spear-armed horsemen on unarmoured horses were a regular part of them. These three metal figures add to such a unit in Hail Caesar. Without armour they stay fast, so you use them on the flanks or against light troops and skirmishers. Their opponents are the Greek hoplites of the Persian Wars, for example in a scenario based on Plataea in 479 BC.
