Background & context

Achaemenid Persian archers stood at the heart of ancient warfare within the Persian Empire. They could stand behind spara shields or act as more mobile ranged fighters, and were relevant in many conflicts against Greeks, Macedonians, and other adversaries. Such troops were deployed in armies characterized by different weapons, levels of protection, and tactical roles. For tabletop armies, this set forms a clear historical building block for ancient Persian armies. The classification is based on the depicted troop type and the historical context described by the manufacturer.

On the tabletop

In an Achaemenid army, armoured archers are the shooting mass behind the shield wall. You set the included sparas up as a wall in front of the unit and let the 24 archers send their arrows over the front from behind it. Alternatively you break them up into skirmishers and use them to harass enemy flanks. Officers, standard bearers and musicians lead the unit against Greeks, Macedonians, Scythians or Indians, and in the Persian civil wars as well.
