    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The Petlyakov Pe-2 is considered one of the most remarkable aircraft developments of the Soviet Air Forces in World War II. Originally conceived as a high-altitude fighter, the design was fundamentally revised within a few weeks and re-established as a dive bomber. The result was a fast, agile aircraft that, despite relatively little crew protection, became one of the most feared ground attack aircraft on the Eastern Front. With a total production of over 11,000 units, the Pe-2 was one of the most mass-produced twin-engine aircraft of the entire war.

    In the game, the Pe-2 Squadron represents a complete Blood Red Skies squadron. The squadron is suitable for fast bomber air combat and attack missions; its strengths should be consciously exploited in scenarios across the Eastern Front throughout the entire war. For the Soviet Union, it provides a thematically clear choice that can be used directly with the corresponding cards, bases, and markers.
