Background & context

Panzergrenadiers were the infantry meant to keep pace with the tanks, motorised in lorries or armoured in the Sd Kfz 251. Because they had to strike fast and hard in the attack, their platoons received considerably more MG 42s than the grenadiers of the infantry divisions, often two per squad. The Panzerschreck, the German answer to the American bazooka, arrived from 1943 and for the first time gave the platoon an anti-tank weapon that could stop a Sherman at 150 metres. In Normandy in 1944 Panzergrenadiers almost always fought dismounted, because the Jabos (fighter-bombers) took apart every half-track column by day.

On the tabletop

In Flames of War the Panzergrenadiers are the infantry of the German panzer divisions, advancing together with the tanks. With two MG42s in every squad, the ten-team platoon brings a lot of firepower to bear on enemy infantry. Panzerfausts give it a weapon against vehicles at short range. Use the platoon to take positions, or to hold villages and wood edges that your tanks cannot secure on their own.
