Product details

Background & context

From December 1942 the G version came off the line; with over 7,700 built it was the most common version of the assault gun and at the same time the most-produced German armoured fighting vehicle of the war. The 7.5cm StuK 40 L/48 could shoot through any T-34 at 1,000 metres, and because there was no turret to protect, frontal armour and add-on plates could be lavished on it without the weight getting out of hand. By the spring of 1944 the assault artillery had reported around 20,000 kills. Its strength lay in defence: fire from cover, roll back, take up a new position. Attacks across open ground, by contrast, were not its forte.

On the tabletop

The five late StuGs form a German assault gun platoon in Flames of War with the long 7.5 cm gun. Without a turret they stay low and are easy to conceal, and the extra armour plates on the front protect the crew. They work best on the defensive: place them in cover, let the enemy come to you and engage his tanks at range. Attacking across open ground, on the other hand, is not their job.
