Product details

Background & context

The Panzer I came about in the early thirties as a training machine, because proper battle tanks were still lacking and the Treaty of Versailles stood in the way. Two MG34s in a tiny turret and armour that just kept out rifle fire: nothing more was ever planned. Even so, it went into the front line in 1939 and 1940, simply because nothing else was available in sufficient numbers. The same chassis gave rise to the kleiner Panzerbefehlswagen, the first purpose-built German command vehicle.

On the tabletop

The five Panzer Is represent the light German tanks of the 1939 and 1940 campaigns in Flames of War in 15 mm scale. With two machine guns and thin armour they are suited to fighting infantry and unarmoured vehicles, and you are better off avoiding tank duels. Each vehicle can be built as a small Panzerbefehlswagen instead, with a fixed superstructure and a more powerful radio in place of the turret. That gives the platoon its own command vehicle.
