Background & context

Die Normannen des 11. Jahrhunderts sind vor allem für ihre gepanzerten Reiter bekannt, doch die Masse ihrer Heere stand zu Fuß. Wer sich kein Kettenhemd leisten konnte, kämpfte im Wams mit Schild, Speer oder Schwert und wurde als Aufklärer, Plünderer und Reserve eingesetzt. Bei Hastings 1066 waren es solche Männer, die vor den Rittern gegen den angelsächsischen Schildwall anliefen. Auf Sizilien und in Süditalien bildeten normannische Fußtruppen danach jahrzehntelang den Kern der Besatzungen.

On the tabletop

With four unarmoured foot warriors including a musician, a light Norman infantry unit gets its command base in Hail Caesar. Men who could not afford a mail shirt fought with shield, spear or sword and served as scouts, raiders or reserve. On the table you therefore use these troops on the flanks rather than in the centre. At Hastings in 1066 men like these advanced ahead of the knights against the Anglo-Saxon shield wall. The figures are metal.
