Background & context

Die normannische Reiterei des 11. Jahrhunderts bestand nicht nur aus gepanzerten Rittern. Hinter der ersten Reihe ritten Sergeants und Gefolgsleute ohne Kettenhemd, billiger ausgerüstet und deshalb zahlreicher. Sie plänkelten mit Wurfspeeren, deckten die Flanken und setzten Fliehenden nach - also die Arbeit, die eine Schlacht entscheidet, nachdem die Linie einmal gebrochen ist. Dieselbe Art Reiter findet sich bei den Bretonen, in den Heeren der Reconquista um El Cid und bei den ersten Kreuzfahrern.

On the tabletop

The twelve riders without mail are the sergeants and retainers who rode alongside the armoured Norman knights. In games they skirmish with javelins, cover the flanks and follow up when the enemy gives way. With 24 heads and four shield shapes you can also build Bretons, Spaniards, Andalusian light horse or squires of early crusaders. Spear, sword, axe, mace and dagger are included.
