Product details

Background & context

The classic samurai of the Kamakura period was first of all a mounted archer: kyuba no michi, the way of bow and horse, summed up his whole sense of himself. Only later did the emphasis shift to lance and sword, and in the Sengoku period the cavalry became the shock force alongside massed ashigaru formations. Armour of lacquered lamellar plates and sashimono banners visible from afar made every rider the figurehead of his clan.

On the tabletop

The twelve mounted samurai are the most mobile troops in your Japanese army in 28 mm scale. Built with the yumi bow, they fight in the old manner of the mounted archer and shoot at the enemy on the move. With yari or katana they become shock cavalry, the role they played alongside ashigaru formations in the Sengoku period. Send them against flanks and against shooters that have no spearmen in front of them.
