Background & context

Walter Nowotny is one of the most famous fighter pilots of World War II. The Austrian-born pilot achieved the majority of his 258 aerial victories on the Eastern Front, where he primarily flew Focke-Wulf and Messerschmitt propeller aircraft. As commander of a special unit, he played a key role in the testing and tactical development of the first production-ready jet fighter - pioneering work that placed entirely new demands on pilots and commanding officers. He achieved his last three kills in the cockpit of the Me 262 before he died in November 1944 under circumstances that remain not fully clarified to this day.

On the tabletop

Walter Nowotny scored 258 victories, 255 of them on the Eastern Front, and then took over Kommando Nowotny, which tested the Me 262 and had to develop new tactics for the jet. In Blood Red Skies you field his Me 262 as an ace in the late defence of the Reich. Like every Me 262 it lives on high speed, so avoid slow turning fights. With its advantage base and cards it strengthens an Me 262 squadron or carries a scenario around 8 November 1944.
